From THE GLOVE COMPARTMENT CAR CARE BOOK:
Independent shops can provide all the necessary scheduled maintenance, and are cheaper than car dealerships. If you have an extended warranty, make sure you can have your car serviced at an independent service garage. Independent shops that are part of national chains, such as Goodyear or Firestone, have all the latest high-tech equipment necessary for tune-up on today's computerized cars and are generally very reliable.
Local gas stations are ok for oil changes and checking brakes, but they probably won't have the proper diagnostic equipment for a tune-up.
Avoid shops that specialize in 30-minute oil changes, as they won't check your brakes and or rotate tires.
Try get to know the service manager like you would your dentist or doctor. If he knows you and your car, you'll have a much easier time determining what service is necessary. [...]
