A car's air conditioning should be checked at least every couple of years, to prevent any possible permanent damage to the system due to low levels of Freon.

The air conditioning system should be checked for leaks. Freon leaks can occur especially in a car over three years old.

If there isn't enough Freon in the system, the air conditioner will not cool the car. If the Freon is low it can be replaced by a certified air conditioning technician. Replacing the Freon is called an "evacuation and charge".

If you believe your car's Freon is leaking it should be checked as Freon is harmful to the environment.

The air conditioning compressor under your car's hood pumps Freon gas under pressure through the air conditioning system. When Freon expands it becomes very cold and it cools the metal pipes it is flowing through. A fan then blows air by the cold pipes which cools the air.
