Whether you’re a hardcore motorcyclist or a weekend warrior, if you ride a motorcycle on public roadways, West Virginia requires a minimum amount of liability and uninsured motorist coverage.

If you like the freedom and lifestyle motorcycle riding offers on West Virginia’s country roads, don’t forget that the peace of mind that comes with insurance can add enjoyment to the time you spend in the saddle.

Choosing the right motorcycle insurance policy is much like choosing the right bike. You can customize the motorcycle policy to meet your personal preference. You can choose the type of coverage you need for your bike, the deductibles you want, and the payment plan that suits your wallet.

Bodily injury and property damage liability covers your legal liability for an accident that was caused by your negligence where there is injury to another party or damage to someone’s property, up to the limit of liability you select.

Medical payments coverage pays the cost of necessary medical care received, up to the limit of coverage, as a result of a motorcycle accident and can be used regardless of who is at fault. The coverage often is limited to medical treatment received within the first three years after an accident and is limited to a specific dollar amount.

When the at-fault party does not have insurance, uninsured motorists bodily injury will cover damages you incur that the at-fault party is legally liable for, such as medical treatment and lost wages.

If your injury expenses exceed the at-fault party’s liability limits, you can use underinsured motorists bodily injury overage to pay for the amount not covered by the at-fault person’s insurance. Uninsured motorists property damage covers damage to your motorcycle caused by someone who does not have insurance.

Similar to uninsured motorists coverage, underinsured motorists coverage is designed to cover the gap between the other person’s liability limits and the amount of your injury expenses, up to the underinsured motorists limits you select. Underinsured motorist coverage is an optional coverage in West Virginia.
